Design Ideas

So below I’ve been sketching out some ideas on how I want the phone app, poster and website to look for my infographic. They all carry the same style throughout with different plans for each. For the app I want it to be a very visual piece, something that has a good mix of images and information which in turn makes it easy to understand. With the poster and website I want this theme to carry along but with slight alterations mainly on the website. With this I want it to be a single scrolling piece but with the addition of icons at the top and bottom which allow you to cycle through the info if you so wish.
Below are all the sketches.

I’ve also had some ideas for the look of a cartoon Einstein. It’s only an idea as I might not use it at all.

Of all of these sketches (including the interface designs) I want them to have a specific colour palette as I’ve noticed thought flat design websites that there is a consistent feature when it comes to the colours. With my designs I have an idea to make the colours green and yellow. Depending on the shades this can look interesting.

Final Piece – Typography

I call this one Slant Edge.

With the initial brief I wanted to create something that relates to new technologies, something that is bold and simple yet easy to look at. After hundreds of different ideas I finally filed it down to one finished piece that I feel successfully portrayed my initial idea.

Within this document I have the sketches, the six letters and a mockup representing the type within my chosen area. I’ll be talking about each as I go along.

ABCDEF small         Final Letters

This is Slant Edge. I’ve mixed two font styles together to create a hybrid of sorts. Similar to one of my other designs I have a rounded edges along the bottoms of each letter. I like this because it gives the type a sense of informality to it meaning that it bends the rules and loosens the noose within corporate standards, giving the product a interesting twist. Next is the product placement.

Apple

For this I found a piece of concept art and placed it within a poster as a way of making my own product. I feel that the font works well with the format and style of the piece. It looks professional and doesn’t draw too much attention away from the main product. Below are some examples of the product within the public.

And that’s my final piece.

Still experimenting

I’m experimenting. I like it because I’ve taken an already aesthetically pleasing type and edited it to make it more interesting and fluent. The font that I’ve edited is BARON NEUE.

Altered BARON NEUE

I’ve got a two versions but here is my favourite one.

I like this one because I’ve gotten rid of the edges on some of the letters. It gives a futuristic look which is what I was going for in the first place.

Altered BEBAS NEUE 2

This is the second one that I designed. Personally I’m not a fan as I feel the shaded areas stand out a little too much.

Actual Research

I’ll start with flat design, as that’s what I really want to incorporate into my infographic. I found a graphic design artists named Adam Rudzki, a Polish designer who’s worked with many different companies, making websites, apps and different interfaces.

To start with, his entire website is a scrolling, flat designed marvel. It features a range of different pastel colours and icons that just jump out at you. This is exactly what I want with my design.

Next is with a website. The reason why I’ve picked this as a research piece is because I love the colours, they stand out right in front of everything. I found the website on http://www.awwwards.com/websites/flat-design/,  a website that promotes and celebrates good design. With this one it just stood out to me with the contrast between the blocky colours and the blurred images that falls behind. This is something that I want to incorporate into my design, bright colours that catch your attention.

Finally I found a group that design infographics for a living and they are beautiful. http://www.mikewirthart.com/portfoliopage/

There’s no fault with it and, similar to the first one I noted down they have a scrolling website that features beautiful icons and pastel like colours. They use all kinds of shapes and colours as well as different subjects that set them apart from anything else. I like these as an artist because, again like the others, I like the colours and I feel that in an infographic colour is important because that’s what draws the attention to it and I’ve noticed that most infographics all have a specific palette of colours.

Got lost in research…

So my initial idea was to create an infographic on the concept of Einstein never existing, so, for example I was going to look at whether or not the theory of relativity would be discovered sooner or later and whether or not the atom bomb would have still been created. So long story short I ended up learning about how Hitler would’ve created the atom bomb and become supreme leader of the world. Already it seems too much for a simple infographic. I also found out that Einstein didn’t have any direct involvement with the Manhattan Project/Atom Bomb as he just sent a letter to the U.S. warning them of Hitler’s discovery, so it’s not really much to go on.

I kinda just overcomplicated it for myself and now I’m edging back towards maybe creating a simple, flat designed infographic and the science of the theory of relativity.

My target audience would be people my age, so ages 18 to 22. I like the idea of flat design because you can incorporate simple themes and colours and make it look beautiful while still keeping to a simplistic, minimalistic theme.
